Too often the parks department (and city administration in general) forgets how important a well designed park system is to the city's future.
It may sound like I'm crying over spilled milk, but a recent example shows how important it is to plan ahead.
A couple of years ago many people were surprized to learn that the large treed area south of Red Deer College was not public land, and that the owner is going to turn almost all of it into parking lots, big box stores, and housing. The smell of putrefying pig parts from Olymel is a pretty discouraging factor in terms of enjoying the parks. I am amazed at the location of this plant given the pollution. Nothing like the the dreary smell of fear and death on your morning walk! On the upside, I don't think I can ever eat bacon again.
