Keeping our parks clean and beautiful

Communities like Tofino, BC are banning smoking in parks to reduce the litter associated with cigarette butts. While The City is not considering an outdoor smoking ban in parks, we would like our parks to remain clean and beautiful. How can we expand or improve our efforts to encourage Red Deerians to respect nature within our community?

I think an outdoor ban on smoking in City parks should be considered. It's filthy, and smokers rarely use appropriate facilities to dispose of their waste. Another idea would be to put a bag dispensary similar to the dog clean up bag stations that in some parks. Encourage visitors to pick up trash that they see along the way and dump it into the nearest receptacle when they are done. I've seen a vast improvement in the parks since those dog "treat" bags were put in place. I usually carry my own but if you forget, it's great to have one available.

Enforce the littering by-law.

I hate cigarette butts as much as anybody, but lets not lose sight of the fact that parks are where people go to do things they can't do at home or at work. As long as our citizens are not leaving a mess behind, why shouldn't they be able to smoke in the great outdoors?

Smoking in the middle of a public event like the Canada Day concert is probably too obnoxious, but in most other situations, enforcing the litter bylaws is a much better solution.

Tony, I agree with what you are saying, but (no pun intended) how do you get smokers not to just 'toss their cigarette butts anywhere they wish'? It is not just the parks. Everywhere you go all over the city there are butts strewn everywhere. Perhaps the city needs to have a media blitz on properly disposing cigarette butts. It would take an army to enforce the litter bylaws! My two cents worth.
